After 100 years, Severs Building to be feted

Reception to include famous faces of its past as hotel

Early Muskogee millionaire Frederick Severs did not live to see completion of the 10-story building bearing his name.

However, over the past 100 years, famous people stayed there when the building was a hotel, and regular folks banked there.

Downtown Muskogee Inc. will mark the Severs Centennial with a gala reception at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The reception will be in conjunction with the Greater Muskogee Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours fete. Three Rivers Museum will display photos and artifacts from the building’s early days. Light refreshments will be offered by Bank of Oklahoma, which has a branch in the Severs Building.

A few of the hotel’s famous “visitors” also will stop by, said Downtown Muskogee Inc. Executive Director Jonita Mullins. People who have stayed at the Severs Hotel include Will Rogers played by Marty Tipton AKA (The Oklahoma Kid) who Quoted some of Wills famous sayings and spun some spectacular rope rope tricks. Kid has fantastic resemblance to Will's look and mannerisms and also in attendance was Helen Keller, Eleanor Roosevelt, Sarah Bernhardt, Harry S. Truman as well as Mr.Severs
